High 17C and Low 9C. Rain Today

Hey, how are you today? Hoping your weekend was great.

👀 Let’s see what’s on the news today:

Dublin Airport to introduce new hand luggage liquid rules starts this Sunday.

Sudden rise in passport checks at the door when flights land in Dublin.

Starting this Sunday, Dublin Airport will have new rules for carrying liquids in hand luggage.

In Terminal 1, all liquids must be in containers of 100ml or less, placed in a clear 1-liter bag (20cm x 20cm), and put visibly in the security tray. Each passenger can only have one 1-liter bag.

Large electronic items like laptops and tablets need to be taken out of bags and placed in the security tray.

In Terminal 2, the rules for liquids are the same: containers must be 100ml or less, in clear bags, and placed visibly in the security tray. However, in Terminal 2, there is no limit on the number of clear bags or 100ml containers you can carry, and you don’t have to take out electronic items from your hand luggage.

Efforts to stop people from entering the country without travel documents have increased a lot in recent months. Now, about 6.5% of flights arriving in Dublin are checked for passports right at the gate.

According to information given to The Irish Times, officials from the Border Management Unit, along with the Garda National Immigration Unit, checked passports at the gates of over 4,500 flights during the first seven months of 2024. Around 2,000 of these checks happened in July alone, as officials worked harder to stop people from seeking asylum without the needed documents.

These checks began last year after it was found that 40% of people seeking asylum in Ireland had either lost or destroyed their travel documents before reaching immigration control.

Officials think many people are getting rid of their passports after getting off the plane but before reaching immigration control, thinking this might help them seek asylum. These checks are meant to make sure new arrivals have the required documents before they have a chance to throw them away.
